Flight to KCQW

No real agenda other than poking holes in the sky.  Took a short flight down to Cheraw (KCQW) Did however get in some gnary direct crosswind landings.  The winds in Cheraw were blowing directly xwind at 16-18 kts.

First Fly-In!

Ok guys, here is a monster update for today. I got to take the Cherokee out on her first fly-in today to the Rock Hill Airport (KUZA) for the South Carolina Breakfast Club. A co-worker of mine came along with me over to Rock Hill and to experience his first SC Breakfast Club!

The weather was severe clear today and I knew that the crowd would be large so I decided to depart no later than 7:30am to beat the rush. It was a very short 19 minute flight over to Rock Hill clipping along at a crisp 110mph smooth as glass.

We were the first one to arrive at the fly-in but that lasted no time as before we had even taxied to parking people started arriving.

I lost count with how many airplanes ended up showing up but I took an absolute TON of pictures.
The plane did great and we had a great time!

Video from today:

Here is a huge picture album from today over 144 pictures...

KEQY to KPYG

Just a small update today but still an important one. Took a quick trip from Monroe to Pageland. What makes this important is Pageland is a much smaller runway and airport than Monroe. Still plenty of room for the little Cherokee, but still got to perform a short field departure.
Most importantly today was the first day we reached out to CLT approach to verify the xponder. I was able to talk to CLT approach and not only did they immediately pick me up with no issue but the altitude was reading perfectly.

Finally today was my first flight with my 'new to me' iFly 700 as a backup to my iPad. It's a nice unit and I really enjoyed having it in instrument mode so I could get the heading indicator in a heads up view. It was really handy to have and easy to read in the full sun.

Here is the video if you would like to see how she handles on a much shorter runway. Please note how it leaps off the ground on that short field.

KEQY to KUZA

The little cherokee is still humming right along, we flew her for the first time this weekend from EQY to UZA, even tho that trip isn't very far it's the first time we've had it over populated areas and skirting the class B of Charlotte.
It was really cool to see big heavy jets passing over top of us as we made our way under the shelf between the areas and following the river to Rock Hill and back.
This is all in preparation for taking the plane for it's first fly-in post restoration on April 17th, which will be held in Rock Hill (UZA). We will be there for the SC Breakfast Club http://www.flyscbc.com/
If any of you guys are based out of Rock Hill or will be attending the fly-in be sure to say hello!

First Flight Away from Airport

Finally! After months of preparing we took the little Cherokee out of the immediate area for the first time in 10 years.

This was just a small 20nm trip from KEQY to KLKR, I'm pleased to say that the plane did very well and we had no issues.  In fact on the return trip I even got to practice my ILS approach and landing.

Pretty Breezy Sunday

Pretty breezy Sunday for some landings.  Winds were 10kt gusting to 19 straight down the runway.  Made for very bumpy take offs and landings.  Good rudder work practice as the plane would get tossed around the closer to the ground you got.

Alot of fun and so glad to finally get back into the air after several weeks of really crappy weather.

New cover!

The new cover made it in today just in time for the rain.

Also, special props to Bruce's Custom Covers for somehow color matching the strap plates to the airplane (what's left of the paint)

10 hour oil change

So we hit another major milestone today, we finally reached 10 hours of flight time.  This meant that we could do the first oil change to check the filter for any signs of metal.  A critical point in time as it would give us our first glimpse inside of the engine after the return to flight.

I am beyond thrilled to report that not only was there no metal issues found but we also showed no signs of excess blow-through or carbon buildups.

If the weather holds this weekend we have been cleared to take her on a small trip to the next airport over. (KAFP)

Quick Flight Today

Today's flight was pretty routine, getting more hours in outside the pattern.  Today we climbed up to 3500 feet to the base of the clouds and out to the practice area.  It was a little too bumpy to work on manuevers but still a nice little flight.

It was also the first flight with the wheel pants, new tires and new beacon.

Any time spent in the air is good time.

This little light of mine....

Well I'm sad to report that the Grimes Rotating Beacon, high atop the tail, that has watched over the little Cherokee's flights since 1972 has finally passed on to the great beyond.

We have repaired and cleaned the old beacon several times but finally it reached a point where it was no longer repairable.  Time for an upgrade!

We have replaced the old mechanical beacon with a new self contained halogen light.  This new unit (with adapter plate) mounted directly into the spot of the old beacon and required no re-wire or changing out of the electronics.

Also, being that we no longer have to drive a mechanical motor AND a lamp the power draw on the battery is now less, which is always a bonus.

They do make more energy efficient strobe or LED systems that I could have installed but (for now) they were cost prohibitive, so I opted to go for the basic halogen lamp system.

Still an upgrade over the original system.

New Tires and Pants On

With Tinker Belle supervising the work, the little Cherokee got her a set of 3 brand new 600-6 GoodYear Tires.  We were waiting on new tires before we put the wheel pants back on, this should add about 100 knots to the cruise speed :)

It does feel good to finally get to see the plane "whole" again.

Unfortunately, we were unable to take her on a flight due to very gusty winds and low ceilings.  But hopefully soon we will get to take her for another spin.

Another milestone...

The First Wing View from the Cherokee
This weekend saw two major milestones for the little Cherokee.  First was a flight lasting 1.2 hrs which is to date the longest single flight of the Cherokee, second and most excitedly today we were able to leave the pattern for the first time.

The Cherokee was able to perform all of the 'standard' manuevers for the first time.  Slow flight, stalls, and steep turns.

Next up will be a short XC to a nearby airport!

Also, and most importantly I was able to use the plane to achieve one of the goals I had set which was to share the joy of aviation by giving someone their very first airplane ride.  Being able to share the joy and fun of general aviation with others has always been one of my goals.

Late evening over the practice area

New goodies..

Hope everyone had a great holiday.  The weather was terrible here with 76 degrees and storms on Christmas Day.  That meant no flying but I was able to score some cool new things for the plane.

A new RAM yoke mount for my iPad.  Can't wait to try this out on all those cross countries.

Anew Pitot cover (with flag) my old one was all dry and rotted off.

A handy checkmate reference card for operations.  Much easier than having to dig through the flip book.

A sweet window decal for my car :)

And my favorite...a toy model of my plane for my desk at work :)
